Pumps rarely fail on a quiet Tuesday in March. They tend to quit on a 98-degree Saturday with guests on the way. We built this page for that moment. You get the right part from a brand you already trust, and you don't have to wait for a delivery truck.
Three Machines Do the Work on Every Equipment Pad
Most pads come down to three pieces of pool equipment, and each one has a single job:

- Pool pumps pull water from the skimmer and main drain and push it through the system.
- Pool filters trap dirt, debris, and fine particles in that water.
- Pool heaters warm the water before it goes back to the pool.
Water travels in one loop: pool, pump, filter, heater, then back to the pool. When one piece fails, the whole loop stops. We also carry submersible pumps for draining and for pumping water off pool covers.
Need parts? We keep small replacement parts on the shelf for all three brands. That includes the Hayward union gasket 2-pack, the Jandy drain plug with O-ring, and the Pentair heater pressure switch.
If you'd like to see a real pad before you shop, this walkthrough from J Bradley Pools shows how a pump, a heater, and the plumbing connect.
Pool Pumps: Single-Speed, Variable Speed, and Submersible
Pool pumps come in three main types. Let's break it down.

- Single-speed pumps
- Variable speed pumps
- Submersible pumps
Single-Speed Pumps Always Run at Full Power
A single-speed pump runs at one fixed motor speed whenever it's on. The design is simple and familiar. The downside is that it moves water at full power even when a gentle flow would be enough. California rules now limit where these pumps can go in as replacements, so check with our staff before you buy one.
A Variable Speed Pool Pump Uses Less Energy
A variable speed pool pump has a permanent-magnet motor. You can set it anywhere from low to high speed so the flow fits the task. Running slower for longer uses far less energy than running at full blast, and that's the reason regulators favor these pumps.
Three bodies set the rules. The U.S. Department of Energy sets federal standards for dedicated-purpose pool pumps through its Appliance and Equipment Standards Program. The California Energy Commission adds its own requirements under the Title 20 appliance regulations. ENERGY STAR also certifies pool pumps that qualify.
In our view, most owners replacing a circulation pump should look at variable speed first. Our variable speed pump guide is coming soon and will cover setup in more detail. Until it's ready, start with our article on setting pool pump run times.
A Submersible Pool Pump Handles Temporary Jobs
A submersible pool pump sits directly in the water. People use one to drain a pool or spa for repairs, clear rainwater off a cover, or deal with spillover. It doesn't replace a circulation pump.
| Pump type | Best for | Energy profile | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Variable speed | Most inground pools | Lowest energy use | Daily circulation, replacements |
| Single-speed | Limited legacy uses | Highest energy use | Fixed-flow systems |
| Submersible | Temporary jobs | Runs only when needed | Draining, cover pumping |
Pool Filters: Sand, Cartridge, and DE
Each filter type balances how fine it filters against how much care it needs. Your choice depends on which of those matters more to you.
Sand Filter
A sand filter pushes water through a bed of filter sand. When the pressure climbs, you backwash by reversing the flow to flush the debris out. Sand filters are forgiving and easy to live with, but they catch the coarsest particles of the three types.
Cartridge Filter
A cartridge filter traps dirt in pleated fabric elements. You never backwash it. You pull the cartridge out and hose it off, which saves water. Many LA homeowners pick cartridge filters for that reason.
DE Filter
A DE filter coats its internal grids with diatomaceous earth, a powder made from fossilized algae. It catches the finest particles of any filter type. It also takes the most hands-on care, since you have to backwash it and then recharge it with fresh DE. We stock grid parts such as the Jandy grid top spacer for DEV and DEL models.
| Filter type | Filtration fineness | Maintenance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DE | Finest | Backwash and recharge with DE | Owners who want the clearest water |
| Cartridge | Fine | Remove and rinse, no backwash | Water-conscious owners |
| Sand | Coarsest | Backwash | Low-fuss, set-and-forget owners |

Pool Heaters: Gas, Heat Pump, and Solar
Gas Pool Heater
A gas pool heater burns natural gas or propane and warms water quickly in any weather. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that gas heaters suit pools that are heated for short periods. Read our guide to gas pool heater operation before you start yours for the first time.
Pool Heat Pump
A pool heat pump uses a compressor to pull warmth from the surrounding air. It heats more slowly than gas. The DOE explains that heat pumps cost less to run and work best in mild climates, which is a good description of Southern California. To learn more, see how a pool heat pump works.
Solar Pool Heater
A solar pool heater sends pool water through collectors that the sun warms. According to the DOE's solar pool heater overview, operating costs are very low once the system is installed.
| Heater type | Heat-up speed | Operating cost | Best climate/use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas | Fastest | Highest | On-demand heat, spas, cool evenings |
| Heat pump | Moderate | Low | Mild climates, season extension |
| Solar | Slowest | Lowest | Sunny regions, steady warmth |

Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy Pool Equipment from an Authorized Dealer
- Pentair: Pentair pool equipment includes variable speed pumps, filters, heaters, and replacement parts.
- Hayward: Hayward pool equipment includes pumps, sand and cartridge filters, heaters, and gaskets.
- Jandy: Jandy pool equipment includes pumps, DE and cartridge filters, heaters, and heat pumps.
Here is why dealer status matters. Each manufacturer writes its own warranty rules, and coverage can depend on where you bought the equipment and who installed it. When you buy through an authorized dealer, you stay inside the sales channel the brand supports. We don't quote warranty terms on this page because each brand publishes its own and changes them from time to time. For the current terms on your model, check the official Pentair, Hayward, or Jandy website.
10,000+ In-Stock SKUs with Same-Day LA Pickup
When people search "pool equipment stores near me" or "pool equipment near me," they usually want one thing: the part on a shelf, today. A good price on discount pool equipment doesn't help much if the part is on backorder, so we keep more than 10,000 equipment SKUs in stock.

Next steps: call or visit, confirm the brand and model, and pick up the part the same day. There's no shipping wait and no guessing from a photo. Our Los Angeles pool store locator shows the closest counter.
On-Site Installation and Pump Repair Service
Buying the part is only half the job. Our team installs pumps, filters, and heaters on-site, and we repair pumps as well. Details on our pool pump repair service will be on the site soon.
Professional installation covers the plumbing and electrical connections. You get a working pad, and you don't have to deal with unions, wiring, or startup settings yourself.
How to Choose the Right Pool Equipment for Your Pool
Our installation and repair team goes through this checklist before recommending a pump, filter, or heater:
- Pool size and volume: the number of gallons determines everything else.
- Flow rate and turnover: the gallons per minute needed to cycle the water in a reasonable time.
- Plumbing size and pad footprint: pipe diameter and the space you have available.
- Filter type and maintenance tolerance: whether you'd rather backwash, rinse, or recharge.
- Heating goals: a longer swim season or year-round swimming.
- Fuel availability: natural gas, propane, or electric service.
- Brand compatibility: matching existing Pentair, Hayward, or Jandy gear.
- Warranty and service support: who backs the equipment locally.
Quick decision path:
- Replacing like-for-like? Bring the brand and model number to the store, and we'll match it.
- Upgrading? Talk to our staff or book an installation so the new equipment fits your pad.
Pool chemicals, cleaning tools, and automation each have their own guides on our site.
Pool Equipment FAQ
Where can I buy pool equipment in Los Angeles with same-day pickup? Any Discount Pool Mart location. We stock Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy gear for same-day pickup.
Is Discount Pool Mart an authorized Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy dealer? Yes. We're an authorized dealer for all three brands.
Does buying from an authorized dealer affect my manufacturer warranty? It can. Coverage rules vary by manufacturer, so check the brand's official warranty terms for your model.
Do you install the pool equipment you sell? Yes. We install pumps, filters, and heaters on-site, and we also repair pumps.
Can I replace my pump or filter with the same brand and model? Often, yes. Bring in the model number. If that pump model no longer meets current California rules, we'll point you to a compliant match.
What are the must-haves for a pool in 2026? Every pool needs a pump to move the water and a filter to clean it. A heater is optional, but it lets you swim for more of the year.
How much room does pool equipment need? You need room for each unit, the plumbing runs, and service access around them. Larger heaters and filters take up more of the pad, so measure before you upgrade.
Ready to fix that pad? Visit a Los Angeles store for same-day pickup, or ask our team about on-site installation. Your pool will be running again before the weekend is over.
