Part 1: Cleaning DE Filters for Your Swimming Pool
When to Clean: Knowing when to clean your DE filter is essential. You should clean it when the pressure gauge on your filter system rises by about 8-10 psi above the normal operating level. This increase indicates that your filter is clogged with debris and needs cleaning.
Step 1:Shut Off the System: Before starting, always switch off the pool pump to ensure safety and prevent debris from entering your pool.
Step 2: Backwash the Filter: Backwashing is the first step. DE filters have a multiport valve with a "backwash" setting. Turn the valve to backwash and run the pump for 2-3 minutes. This reverses the water flow through the filter, dislodging and flushing out the debris.
Step 3: Rinse: After backwashing, set the multiport valve to "rinse" and run the pump for about 30 seconds. This clears any remaining debris and stabilizes the system.
Step 4: Add DE Powder: While the pump is off, mix the recommended amount of DE powder with water to create a slurry. Slowly pour this slurry into the skimmer. This slurry will evenly coat the filter grids.
Step 5: Start the System: Turn the system back on, and ensure it operates on "filter" mode. Monitor the pressure gauge, and when it returns to its normal level, your DE filter is clean and ready to function efficiently.
Diagnosing Damaged or Crystalized DE Grids
It's important to periodically inspect your DE filter's grids for damage or crystalization. Signs of problems include: (Deterioration) Check the condition of the grids. If you notice broken or frayed elements, it's time for replacement. (Crystalized DE) Inspect the grids for any caked or crystalized DE material. This occurs when DE accumulates and hardens on the grids. In such cases, clean the grids thoroughly, or if they are too damaged, consider replacement.
