When a 4-wheel Pool Cleaner stops climbing, stops moving, or the body finally cracks, the failure is almost always inside the head. The hoses are usually fine. This OEM replacement head assembly lets you fix the part that failed and keep the rest of your setup, instead of buying an entire new cleaner. It fits Hayward Poolvergnuegen The PoolCleaner 4-wheel models PBS40JST and W3PVS40JST, arrives ready to connect, and uses genuine Hayward components throughout.
What This Fixes
- Cleaner will not move or climb: Worn internal drive components and steering gears are replaced wholesale with a fresh assembly.
- Weak or inconsistent suction: New self-adjusting turbine vanes restore proper flow response, including on variable-speed pumps.
- Cracked or damaged body: A split housing cannot be patched reliably. The head assembly replaces it outright.
- Poor pool coverage: Restores the programmed steering sequences that drive the cleaner's directional changes.
- Missing internal parts: Rather than sourcing gears, vanes and bearings piece by piece, this replaces the whole unit at once.

Common Questions
My cleaner still moves but barely climbs the walls. Is the head the problem?
Usually yes, though check suction first. If the pump and filter are clean and the hoses are not leaking air, weak climbing normally points to worn drive components inside the head.
How long does the swap take?
Most people manage it in a few minutes. Disconnect the hose from the old head, connect it to the new one, and put the cleaner back in the pool. No tools required for the hose connection.
Can I keep my old hoses?
Yes, and most people do. The hose connection is identical. Only replace hoses if they are cracked, kinked or have lost sections.
How do I confirm I have the 4-wheel model?
Look at the sides. Two wheels per side means 4-wheel and this is the right head. One wheel per side means 2-wheel, and you want the PBS20JSTHBX 2 Wheel Headbox.
Is it worth replacing the head instead of the whole cleaner?
If the hoses are still good, yes. The head is where the wear happens. Replacing it restores the cleaner to full function at a fraction of the cost of a complete unit.
Will this work with a variable speed pump?
Yes. The self-adjusting turbine vanes respond to changing flow, which is what allows the cleaner to keep working at lower pump speeds.
